It is not that often that I get a request to have their newborn photographed outdoors, especially during the Australian winter. But, one warm winter morning on the 28th of July 2019, I had the privilege of having an outdoor portrait photography session with the Morales family with their newborn baby girl at Sydney Olympic Park. It was around 17 degrees outside which we managed to create quick poses. Making sure that the baby is warm in her pram in between shoots. The leaves from the plants and trees still had moisture on them, which makes the leaves shine when sunlight hits them. The dew on the leaves is the perfect condition for creating portraits with bokeh. This is my goto in creating bokeh by finding objects in the background that shine, in this case, the shiny leaves from the trees. As you can see from this image sample, I prefer the subject/s to be backlit by positioning main light source behind the subject. This creates a natural separation of subjects from the background which creates more interest in the portrait image. Have a look at the images below to see what transpired on that winter day.
As you can see from the photos above, that winter day in July 2019 was indeed a perfect time of day for outdoor portraits.
